Clash Royale tips and tricks

Clash Royale has proven to be a wonderfully addictive experience since exploding onto mobile earlier this year, drawing in millions with its impressive tower defense mechanics and rewardingly satisfying gameplay. The addition of new cards, features and challenges have been further refined by regular updates and patches to ensure that Clash Royale remains fun, rewarding and exciting to play as we move forward.

Supercell continues to update Clash Royale with new cards and content, keeping even the most skilled of players on their toes.

All of this new stuff means you’ll be needing some fresh advice, so we’ve put together some helpful tips and tricks for Clash Royale.

We’ll start off with some tips for beginners before diving into some advanced tactics. Finally, we’ll take a look at Tournaments and how to tackle them.

Clash Royale Beginner’s Tips

Join a clan

While not essential, joining up with a clan will grant you a number of worthwhile bonuses as you level up. You can ask your fellow clan members for cards whenever you like, a handy avenue to free upgrades. Cards you have no use for can also be given away, granting you free coins and progress towards your next rank.

In addition to free cards you can also spectate matches. This is an accessible, risk-free way of obtaining new strategies and observing how different units behave and react on the field.

Remember your chests

Chests are the heart and soul of Clash Royale, containing all the precious cards, gold and rewards you work so hard to gain. These can come in a range of variants, some of which are better than others. Free chests are handed out multiple times a day, so keep an eye on those for some valuable freebies.

Spoils such as this add up quickly, so remember to check back everyday to keep unlocking them and continue to earn loot. It’s also worth claiming additional rewards by selecting the achievements ribbon icon beside matchmaking.

Remembering to open your chests on a regular basis should keep your fingers well away from dastardly microtransactions, too.

Attack and defend

Do your best to balance attack and defence in each match. You’re far more likely to emerge victorious if you ensure your towers are safe and sound as you advance.

This can be achieved easily by populating your army with units that have multiple uses. For example, trolls can be used for both attack and defence with their high HP and damage output. Skeletons are a multi-talented bunch too, making individual units trivial in such huge numbers.

Pick the perfect placement

Sticking your units right at the bridges, while allowing them to begin attacking enemy towers quicker, isn’t the optimum strategy. You need to think about placement while also giving yourself time to recover mana. Sometimes it’s better to spawn minions near your main tower, letting them go for a long walk towards the bridges, so that by the time they reach enemy territory, you have enough mana to provide some support so they won’t be quickly despatched.

Equally, don’t spawn a bunch of units all in a small area, because then your opponent can just launch a fireball or other AOE cards to do vast amounts of damage to all your spawns and putting you at a significant disadvantage.

If you’re on the offensive try placing a tank with a large regiment of troops behind it. This will give them an extra dose of defence when pushing forward, and should give you a better chance of dealing some lethal damage to enemy towers.

Upgrade what you use

You might be tempted to upgrade each and every unit you can when the opportunity arises, but try your best to prioritise advancements that fit your usual strategy.

There is no use in upgrading a goblin regiment that will do nothing but sit in your inventory for eternity and never be used. Try and single out the cards you use the most and power those up best you can.

Considering how randomly cards are doled out through chests this might take a while, but the long-term investment is more than worth it, and will most definitely result in a slew of victorious battles.

Gift what you don’t

Parting with your hard-earned collection of beloved cards might sound difficult, but why bother hoarding a bunch of stuff you’re never going to use? If it isn’t in your deck and likely never will be, head over to your clan page and check out any pending card requests.

Chances are a handful of your fellow clashers will be on the lookout for any cards going spare, and you’re in a perfect position to make their day.

Depending on how many requests you grant you can gain plenty of additional gold and XP that can be spent on upgrading your own arsenal. It’s a win/win situation that benefits all those involved.

Work your way up

When you first start playing you’ll often come across mysterious cards and extravagant arenas you won’t have access to until you’ve made hours upon hours of progress.

Don’t let this discourage you, keep pushing forward with the cards you have at your disposal, upgrading them in such a way that puts you ahead of the competition.

Clash Royale has a habit of matching you with players who have spent more money than you, hence the freemium model, so try and adopt a strategy that is difficult to predict.

Clash Royale Tips – How to beat Tanks

Tanks are capable of wiping out entire fleets in a matter of seconds, so it’s handy to know the secret to taking them down.

It’s best to swarm at their feet, overwhelming them with sheer numbers as opposed to strength. Skeleton Giants and Hog Riders can only attack one enemy at a time, and will often disregard your units completely. This makes mounting an effective attack trivial if you plan it correctly.

clash royale 5

Always remember that the enemy may have an AOE (Area of Effect) card on hand, which can be used to counter any units you currently have on the field. It may be worth sacrificing a worthless card or two before assaulting the tank, effectively taking your opponent by surprise.

Clash Royale Tips – Learn to count your elixir

While it may sound arduous, it’s definitely worth memorising how much your most used cards are worth so you can use them instantaneously in battle. Accidentally throwing out a valuable card only to realise you’re out of resources can be frustrating, and even fatal to success.

Learning to count elixir will give you a rough idea of how much your opponent has, and what cards they plan on using as the match progresses. Knowing when your enemy plans to summon units is a perfect way of formulating a timely strategy against an otherwise unpredictable situation.

Clash Royale Tips – How to defeat Hordes

Hordes are an absolute nuisance when it comes to knocking down towers and wiping out units, so it’s essential to wipe them out as quickly as you can. Bombers, Bomb Towers and Valkyries are a great way of taking out armies and minions without putting yourself in any real danger.

Area damage cards such as arrow barrages and fireballs are also quick and concise, even more so if you’re the type of player that keeps them fully upgraded.

Clash Royale Tips – Beating Baby Dragons

Back when he was first introduced The Baby Dragon was a force to be reckoned with. Thankfully, a number of patches have made him far less ferocious.

Despite this, he is still capable of inflicting massive damage at close range. If you have fireballs at your disposal hurl them at the dragon as often as you can. Combine this with The Musketeer and his fiery tongue will be extinguished in no time.

Clash Royale Tips – How to beat Defence Towers

Towers such as Inferno, Tesla and Lightning can be a real nightmare when you’re struggling to push ground troops forward only to have them obliterated the second they get within range.

Baby Dragon is an ideal way of dealing with troublesome towers due to his impressive HP and damage output. The same could be said for Hog Rider, who can effortlessly leap across water and straight towards the enemy tower.

clash royale

Try and sacrifice some low-cost ground units to give your more powerful forces a few extra seconds to attack and, with any luck, take out any pesky towers giving you trouble.

Plenty of towers will also disappear overtime without any effort on your part, so waiting it out may often prove to be the best course of action.

Clash Royale Tips – How to play in Tournaments

The latest update for Clash Royale saw the introduction of Tournaments, a new feature that high-level players can tackle for additional gold, cards and experience.

Tournaments can only be entered once you’ve reached level 8, and each event requires an investment of gems if you wish to compete. It’s an interesting sense of risk and reward that will result in better spoils the further you manage to progress.

If you emerge victorious or rank highly in any given contest you will rewarded with a Tournament Chest. The contents of said chest will depend on your overall ranking and the number of players in the prize pool.

CLASH ROYALE

The best chests contain guaranteed legendaries, a resource that is incredibly difficult to find anywhere else, unless you’re super lucky. You can earn up to 15,000 cards from a single chest, an absolutely mental thought to any Clash Royale player.
