No list of 10-inch tablets can go by without mention of the 9.7-inch iPad. Apple calls this latest version, released in November 2012, the iPad with Retina Display – but we like to think of it as the iPad 4. 
It looks and feels just like the iPad 3, but has a faster processor, the new Lightning connector, improved cameras and uprated wireless connectivity. You can get a 4G version of the tablet now, ready for the newly-opened 4G mobile internet plans of EE.
However, in our book the biggest draw of the iPad remains the top-quality selection of apps and games available from the Apple App Store. You just can’t beat it.
1. Google Nexus 10

Pros – Excellent value and performance
Cons – Not as accessible as an iPad
The bigger brother of the Google Nexus 7, the Google Nexus 10 is a vanilla Android tablet manufactured by Samsung. Like its Nexus sibling, the main draw here is the sheer amount of tech you get for your money. For almost £100 less than an iPad 4, you get an incredible 2,592 х 1,936 pixel screen, super-powered Exynos 5250 1.7GHz processor and advanced features like NFC. 
The Google Nexus 10 is nice and light too, at just over 600g. As the “official” 10-inch Google tablet of the moment, it’s sure to get Android updates before any other rival too – it currently uses version 4.2.1. Like most Samsung tablets, though, its rear is plastic rather than metal, and therefore it doesn’t quite leave the same aesthetic impression as an iPad. There’s also no 3G option here, just 16GB for £319 or 32GB for £389, both with Wi-Fi rather than 3G.
The only other drawbacks here are those that relate to any Android tablet – that it doesn’t have quite the app selection of iOS. And it’s a bit trickier to use if you’re buying a tablet for a technophobe relative.
