Though PCMark05 includes many tests, we've chosen to look only at the most relevant CPU tests. However, in this instance the results weren't anything like we expected, which probably says more about the age of the benchmark than the capabilities of the T9300 and other Penryn CPUs.
As such, as you can see, though the Znote 3415W bests the T7250 powered Dell XPS M1530, it falls behind both the HP Pavilion dv2699 and the Rock X770 T7700, despite having both a higher clock speed and more L2 Cache. We ran the tests several times and saw no change, but why are the results like this?
There's no conclusive answer, but the fact that PCMark 05 was originally designed with Windows XP in mind is the most likely cause. Though it runs very happily on Vista and has worked with few problems until now, there's a good reason that PCMark Vantage was introduced to replace it. We've kept using it up until now to provide compatible comparisons for machines reviewed before PCMark Vantage and while any problems with Vantage are ironed out, but in light of these results it may be time to drop it altogether. Once we get a larger sample of results from Penryn powered machines, we'll get a better idea of whether these results are anomalous or a sign of an incompatibility with these new CPUs.
