As the Amilo D8830 features a desktop CPU, it requires a lot of power and the supplied power brick is just that, a brick. It’s about twice the size of the PSU you find with most notebooks, but as mentioned earlier, this is not the kind of laptop you would be carrying around with you too much.
Fujitsu-Siemens supplies a copy of Microsoft WorksSuite 2003 in the box which includes a copy of Word 2002, as well as a copy of Adobe Photoshop Elements and Norton Anti Virus. The warranty is 1 year collect and return, which is par for the course on a desktop replacement, but nonetheless a little meagre.
The Amilo D8830 is a very impressive desktop replacement notebook and it doesn’t have any major flaws. The price is slightly high at £1,299.99 inc VAT, but you do get a lot of power for your money. If I was to complain about something it has to be the lack of wireless networking, but this would surely have added to the cost.
Verdict
If you’re looking for a desktop replacement notebook you’re obviously more concerned with power than portability. The Amilo D8830 definitely delivers power, so you’re unlikely to find yourself wishing you had a desktop machine. It’s more powerful than the Sony Vaio PCG-FR315S, but it’s also more expensive.
