According to DigiTimes, Taiwanese paper the Economic Daily Report, is detailing that Sony will be launching its netbook for the forth quarter of this year. The newspaper also indicated that Foxconn was set to be manufacturing the system for Sony, but DigiTimes' alternative sources quashed that rumour, suggesting that Foxconn is merely providing components.

That would sit fairly well alongside the previously leaked information that Sony was developing a netbook based on VIA's OpenBook platform. There's some chance that by the time Sony's netbook is available, it could sport a VIA Nano rather than the frankly rubbish C7-M packed into the HP 2133 Mini-Note.

Apparently the reason Sony hasn't entered the market sooner was simply a cautious wariness of the likely popularity of the format. With that well and truly established now, it seems Sony is more than ready to introduce its own offering into the marketplace.

Doubtless Sony will come good and dish out the details regarding its netbook offering in due course.
