We took a look at Panasonic’s ToughBook CF-74 and ToughBook CF-52 last year and were suitably impressed. It’s good news, therefore, to hear that those two systems have now been updated to Intel’s Centrino 2 platform.

That means that the fully rugged CF-74 and semi-rugged CF-52 (old model pictured) now boast improved wireless connectivity, wireless broadband (HSDPA) and, of course, better performance and battery life. Given that ToughBooks are, surprisingly enough, designed with outdoor use in mind, all these benefits will doubtless be very welcome to potential buyers.

The systems’ chassis aren’t being updated, but given that they’re already as rugged as anyone could need that shouldn’t mater. The 15.4in CF-52 and 13.3in CF-74 still boast shock-mounted LCD screens and hard drives, water-resistant keyboards and general incredibly ToughBook standard ruggedness

For those requiring a bit more grunt, Panasonic also has an upgrade option on the CF-52, offering “improved video and system performance”, albeit at a greater cost. Still, as ever with ToughBooks, if you need it, you need it - whatever the cost.

Both systems will eb available in August, with the Toughbook CF-52 starting from $1,949 (~£975) and stretching to $2,849 (~£1,425) for the ‘premium’ upgraded version. The Toughbook CF-74, meanwhile, should be roughly $3,199 (~£1,100).
