Kicking off the week in a particularly pleasing way for school kids around the world today is RM which has unveiled its latest 'miniBook' range of subnotebooks.

Featuring a larger 8.9in screen, 1GB RAM, a 900MHz Celeron M CPU and choice of 12GB Windows-based or 20GB Linux-based SSDs the new miniBooks are essentially rebranded Eee PC 900s and will be pitched at education sectors both in the UK and abroad.

Following up market research that reveals 1.4m learners in schools across England have no access to the Internet at home RM has moved to position the new miniBook/Eee PC 900 as an affordable solution to maximise pupil learning. Various polls and graphs were dished out during the particularly early morning press event but the trend does indeed seem to suggest the elements of accessibility and fun brought in through the introduction of these machines to participating schools has produced positive results.

Interestingly, although the Atom-based 901 spec Eee PC is now with us RM will be selling the 900s from just £285 making them something of a bargain. They will also ship with a modified version of Windows XP Home Edition with a lighter footprint and reduced write cycles to minimise wear and tear on the SSD.

The 7in original Eee PC 701 will continue to be sold at £225 for now while the 901 will appear at a later date with RM stressing it needs to move with the 900 to get stocks in place before the start of the next school year.

Sounds a winner to us and yet another example of the phenomenon that is the Eee PC...

The price quoted excluded delivery and VAT on the minibook and delivery. So the price to those that pay VAT is closer to 330.
