The base specs of OCZ's DIY Gaming Laptop never made for the most promising read, but having now gone on sale the system could in fact win over more buyers than previously thought. Coupled with the stripped-down component list the OCZ Barebone Gaming Notebook also has a fairly low price tag - at least in the US, where it is currently only available.

For around $700 (£350-ish) buyers will get a 15.4in chassis with a 1,280 x 800 resolution panel, an nVidia GeForce 8600M GT and USB ports that can be powered on with the notebook shut down. Other that than, though, nothing comes as standard. The CPU, RAM, hard drive and, in fact, every other major component must be purchased and installed by the end user.

A fairly capable 2.1GHz, Intel T8100 Penryn mobile processor costs around £150, while 4GB of RAM and a 320GB 2.5in (5400rpm) hard drive cost about £55 and £85 respectively. This would put the overall cost of the system in the £700 mark which for the configuration isn't a bad price.

Similar machines from Dell, HP, Samsung and the like either pack lesser processors or inferior GPUs to that OCZ setup for the same money, but then again they come pre-packaged and with better warranties - on the entire system rather than on individual components. If you want the fun of assembling your own notebook, you won't get it any other way, but this definitely isn't an option for everyone.
