If there is a manufacturer capable of making a notebook as desirable as the Sony Vaio TZ, Lenovo is probably it. We've already seen the ThinkPad X300 (review coming soon), which looks set to be a TR favourite, and now US retailer JR.com has prematurely spilled the beans on the IdeaPad U110B - an 11.1in notebook with an uncannily resemblance to Sony's flagship ultra-portable.

The 11.1in screen sports a "WXGA" resolution which should hopefully mean 1,366 x 768 although due to the ambiguity of the label it could be 1,280 x 800 - the former is the more likely candidate though. Inside is a 1.6GHz low-voltage L7500, along with 3GB DDR2 RAM and a 120GB hard drive.

Showing the U110's less directly business user inclination, Lenovo has integrated touch-sensitive multimedia controls, and Dolby Home Theatre sound. Coupled with the glossy screen this should make the notebook fairly competent for watching films. The lack of an internal DVD drive, though, means these will either have to be digital copies, or a USB drive will be needed - draining extra battery juice.

Weight-wise the U110 is listed as about 3lb (1.35Kg-ish) with a battery, which isn't too dissimilar to both the Sony Vaio TZ and Asus U2E. However, both of those match that size weight while also fitting a DVD drive in the chassis. Couple that with the $1999 (£1000 ex-VAT) the U110 will apparently cost and the Lenovo doesn't seem quite as attractive. Still, until official pricing and release dates are unveiled we'll reserve final judgement.
