Back in January, rumours that Asus was planning to launch a touchscreen-fitted Eee PC were met with a fairly swift rebuttal by CEO Jason Chen. Now, though, Kevin Lin, VP of Sales, has conceded that in fact the 8.9in second generation of Eee PCs will be coming with touchscreens after all.

Supposedly pricing will be around the $500 mark, which would probably translate to around £280-odd in the UK. In other words: hardly an extortionate mark-up from the current 7in model given the new and improved specs.

According to industry sources cited by DigiTimes, the second generation Eee will have its base memory upgraded to 1GB and will have SSD options of either 8GB or 12GB. These same sources are also backing up Chen's previous comments that an Intel Atom-powered Eee PC was forthcoming.

Currently Asus is experiencing difficulties supplying batteries for its sub-notebook after a fire in the manufacturing plant, but the company expects this to be rectified by the second half of this year - just in time for the purported May or June shipping date for these touchscreen sporting Eee PCs, so keep your eyes peeled.
