We've heard enough of about Toshiba's troubles with HD DVD, for example a reported half-billion pound loss to the format, but things aren't all bad for the company and in other areas it is still going strong. Backing up that assertion, and more than likely pleasing prospective notebook customers, the Dynabook SS RX1 has just been given an update in Japan, adding the option to fit a 128GB SSD drive coming good on promises from last year.

The hope is, obviously, that this should filter across to the rest of the world and the rest of Toshiba's portable notebook range. According to Toshiba this is the first notebook in the world to offer such a capacity SSD drive, which can surely only add to the attraction.

Of course a price premium is only to be expected for such an upgrade and indeed that's what we find. The RX1 with a 120GB spindle hard drive will set Japanese customers back ¥292,800 (£1,500) increasing to ¥417,800 (£2,150) a 43 per cent premium for the reduction in weight and power consumption.

On the other hand, if you do want the benefits of a solid state drive but also need storage capacity equalling (or at least approaching) that of a conventional drive you're only other option is buying a separate drive. Given a 2.5in 128GB SSD will likely cost you in the region of a couple of thousand pounds that way, Toshiba's offering suddenly seems a lot better value. Hopefully the UK will be seeing this option on its notebooks soon - those Portégé R500s need something to recommend them other than weight, or rather lack of.
