After Asus's launch of the 8.9in Eee PC at CeBIT there was a fair amount of speculation that Intel's recently announced Atom processor might make it inside. In an interview with LAPTOP magazine, Asus CEO, Jerry Shen, has detailed the company's plans for the Eee, including the intention to release an Atom-powered version in the near future.

By process of elimination, then, that indicates that the current raft of Eee PCs are still using the same processor, but at least we know new and improved revisions are coming - hopefully in May. Shen also went on to say that Asus hopes to offer conventional hard drive models on the Eee PC in the future as well as the current solid-state options.

Shen also confirmed that Eee PCs with built-in HSDPA and WiMAX modules will start to hit the streets come Q3, although Shen did suggest that the WiMAX option was dependant on the technology having reached a sufficient level of maturity.

The last forthcoming update to the Eee range is again scheduled for May or June time. This time it will be purely aesthetic, in that a new range of "at least five" new colours will be offered.

From the sound of things Asus is pretty well set to compete with the arrival of the various competing systems from rival manufacturers, though hopefully this is the last time we'll have cause to write about it for a while.
