Rock took a fairly bold gamble when it announced it would be offering its entire notebook range with HD DVD drives as standard. Ultimately that has turned out to be the wrong decision, but at least the company is willing to make amends and is now offering both standard DVD and Blu-ray options, although the HD DVD drive is still priced and included in all base specs.

Downgrading from the HD DVD drive to an 8x DVD writer will save you around £35, while upgrading to a Blu-ray reading, DVD writing drive will set you back £100. If you're feeling especially cavalier, or just have too much money weighing your wallet down, then you can splash out £180-odd to net yourself an HD DVD writer.

The new options are available as of now, and if you have an order outstanding you can get it changed should you so wish - which is always a bonus. If you've been looking for a kick-ass gaming notebook but avoided Rock precisely because of the mandatory HD DVD drive, then now is the time to sally forth.
