I'm pretty sure that even a drooling madman (like myself) could see this one coming, but apparently inside information has now been uncovered suggesting that notebook manufacturers Lenovo and Fujitsu-Siemens have put in a purchase order for a load of the same reduced package CPUs as featured in the MacBook Air.

Neither of these companies has confirmed it has plans to build direct rivals to Apple's latest prodigy, but the smart money would suggest that the increased expense of buying this particular chip surely means they must be planning something special or else they could use standard Core 2 Duos. Given that a very Air-like Notebook as already been leaked from Lenovo, the X300, which uses a standard Core 2 processor but still boasts pretty svelte proportions we're interested to see what the smaller CPU allows the company to accomplish.

As is well known the new shrunken Merom chips, while not quite at Penryn levels of engineering, bring down the heat and power consumption significantly. While Intel designed the chip for the Air, it isn't above selling it to any and all bidders.

No specific details from either FSC or Lenovo are available yet, but as both companies are buying chips they must both be a reasonable way into the design process. It's also likely that many other companies will jump on the "do it better than Apple" bandwagon, so it looks like a race to be first to market and cheapest; always a fun game for the winner - the consumer.
