Most of you are probably aware that Dell is selling a limited number of systems with the option of specifying Ubuntu Linux as the operating system, but that choice has been limited to low spec systems for now. Not any more though, because now you can get the Dell XPS M1330 with Ubuntu pre-installed netting you a decent system without having to stump up for Windows as well - always a bonus.

The M1330n will start with a base spec including a 1.66GHz Core 2 Duo, 1GB of RAM and a 120GB hard drive and set you back a mere £599. Other options are of course available and you can upgrade the CPU and RAM to a maximum 2.2GHz, 4GB respectively. Hard drive options are also available including a 320GB spindle drive and the (ludicrously expensive) option of a 64GB SSD.

Graphics options include either builtin Intel X3100 or nVidia GeForce 8400M GS per customer preference. Given the lack of any real gaming on Linux, the former is probably the best bet so as to eke out a smidgeon more battery life.

Dell is also pre-installing the drivers and software packages necessary to enable DVD playback and other such important functionality, rather than requiring users to work out how to do so themselves. It's a small touch, but for those looking for a first time alternative to Windows and unfamiliar with the joys of apt-get and the Terminal it's an important one.

Initially the system is available in France Germany Spain and, pertinently to this site, the UK although if any of you are reading from across the pond and want in on the fun you'll be able to do so from next week. What are you waiting for? Go forth and join the Open Source revolution!
