It seems almost inevitable in the weeks following the unveiling of the MacBook Air for a slew of leaks to surface from various companies detailing their respective rivals to the latest offering from Cupertino. Were there prizes for such things I believe Lenovo would receive one for being the first company to have its contender to the new MacBook.

Dubbed the X300, it's, oddly enough, a 13.3in screen-packing, reasonably thin, 2.5 pound (~1.13Kg) in a form factor that while not anorexic to MacBook proportions is nonetheless described as ‘extremely thin'. Of course just because the MacBook can't be beaten in terms of thinness doesn't mean it can't have its proverbial handed to it on a plate in every other way. To wit, we find the screen boasts a 1,440 x 900 resolution, the processor is a 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and up to 4GB of DDR2 RAM can be fitted.

As with the MacBook a 64GB SSD can be specified but unlike the MacBook there are three USB ports and a Gigabit Ethernet port - despite the latter's 'obvious' uselessness.

Also making the Lenovo's bill is WWAN and WiMAX connectivity, GPS and an expansion bay, which will accept either a DVD drive, secondary battery or ExpressCard slot.

Availability isn't yet known but is expected to be before the end of the second half of this year and as you might imagine for an early leak no pricing is known. For those of us who value function over pure form this could pose an attractive alternative to Apple's latest spawn.
