The Asus Eee PC 4G may have won the first-to-market race, but us folks in the know have been holding on to our cash in favour of the higher-speced model with 8GB of flash memory and 1GB RAM. This model is notable because it actually has enough hard drive space to fit a Windows XP install on it (just), as well as enough memory to run it - albeit slowly.

Aside from these increases, the Eee PC 8G is still the same hardware elsewhere; same chassis, same 7in, 800 x 480 screen and the same 900MHz Intel processor. If you didn't already guess, doubling the RAM isn't likely to make Windows a particularly pleasant experience; however those willing to stick with Asus' Linux OS should find performance appreciably nippier then the 4G model.

Price wise the system is listed for $499, which will probably translate to around £300 over here, based on the current pricings. Considering upgrading the RAM isn't actually that difficult, assuming you can use a screwdriver, and that there are enough USB ports to mean that augmenting the EEE PC's storage space isn't exactly difficult, you'll have to really need the extra on-board space to justify the higher asking price, but if you can this is definitely the model to go for. Dynamism has it listed as available mid-December so fingers crossed we get it before Christmas in the UK too.
