When I recently commented on Intel’s amazing change of heart as regards its involvement in the OLPC programme we still weren't sure when it would actually see full-scale production. Well, that has now changed. I am therefore sure it will be of great interest to those of you supporting the campaign to hear that the XO is finally entering production on a decent scale, confirming Gordon’s thoughts from back in January that we would see a July launch.

Initially the units will cost $176 dollars each, rather than the $100 initially espoused. But of course once mass production gets going economies of scale will bring that cost down to the desired level. Taiwanese manufacturer Quanta will be bringing together the 800 component parts from various different manufacturers, such as AMD’s processor and putting them together in the final package.

OLPC won’t disclose who is buying the first batch of XO laptops, but they should get their hands on them in October. So, how long until Intel’s own machine, the classmate, is ready in response? Predictions on a postcard. And yes, I know Intel is now a partner in the OLPC scheme. That doesn't stop it wanting its own product to prevail.
