Computex 2007: MSI Notebook Overclocks on the Fly

A new gaming notebook from MSI, based on their existing M series chassis, was being demonstrated at Computex. As well as a funky new tribal paint job and red WASD keys marked with arrows – you know, for moving around in computer games - the new case has an auto-overclocking button.

This Turbo button basically ups the FSB speed by 20 per cent, which makes the processor and memory faster by the same proportion. The button can be activated at anytime and the overclock will kick in without any notification or other intervention – it just works.

The laptops will be available in both 15.4in and 17in versions and with a choice of AMD or Intel platforms - though only the Intel version was available for us to look at. You also get a choice of either an ATI Radeon Mobility HD 2600 XT or an nVidia GeForce 8600 GT. Other options are the same as those for the existing M range.

The keyboards are full size, so feature numpads, and don’t have any squashed keys, but the layout is far from perfect. For a gaming laptop, it’s imperative that the Ctrl key is in its correct position but once again we see this isn’t the case. A few other keys are in odd places but this may be due to it being an American style layout.

The design is not to my taste, I feel it’s rather tacky, but I do like my kit to be more understated so maybe I’m biased. Either way, the finish doesn’t exude quality and I’m sceptical of how long it will remain scratch free. Arrival of these beasts is imminent so we’ll get one in for a full review as soon as possible, no word on price though.
