When Dell announced it had chosen Ubuntu as its Linux OS talk immediately shifted to which models would be on the receiving end. Now we know what and when...

The good news is today (at least in the US) sales are go, the bad however is that the range is not nearly so comprehensive as Open Source fans would have wished. Just one notebook, the 15.4in 'Inspiron E1505' (right) will offer the choice of Vista, XP or Ubuntu, while on the desktop front there are just two models: the 'Dimension E520' (left) and the gamey 'XPS 410' (middle). Even more restrictively, it is believed that all Ubuntu supplied machines will feature Intel chipsets, with no room for AMD.


No announcement was made on price – but a dedicated Dell Ubuntu holding page (above) has been set up here (and it is set to change any minute). Dell said it predicts the first Ubuntu PCs will make up under one per cent of its total yearly sales.

So perhaps not the tide of change Linux die-hards were hoping for, but these are baby steps in a Microsoft dominated world. Furthermore, the calls to reintroduce XP as an OS option shows many have yet to be convinced of Vista's merits. The door is slightly ajar Linux fans, just don't expect to slam it in Bill's face on day one...
