With solid state hard drives (SSDs) and hybrid hard drives (HHDs) finally appearing on the market the temptation to upgrade is mounting, but what if you could gain all the benefits without having to reinstall/copy everything across?

Avoiding this hassle is exactly what Lexar is proposing as it launches a new line of ExpressCard SSDs with capacities ranging from 4GB to 16GB. Designed to be used in conjunction with Vista's ReadyBoost functionality, the cards are less bulky (and prone to snap off) than a USB drive and offer – potentially – far greater capacity.

Interestingly, the ExpressCards also come bundled with backup software so that important files can be automatically saved to the card either daily, weekly or monthly without the user requiring a separate device. Even better, this software recognises individual computers so it can be used between multiple machines, using dedicated settings from each.

Shipping now, the drives certainly make a compelling case. No UK pricing has been announced yet but the 4GB and 8GB models will sell in the US for $130 and $200 respectively – a darn sight cheaper than buying a whole new HHD or SSD and more straightforward too...
