At the start of the month AMD rolled out 690G, its first mobile chipset with integrated graphics that was capable of running 'Windows Vista Premium' (ie Aero), now the first evolution of this platform is here.

With the arrival of the 'M690G' chipset AMD is promoting not just its Vista Premium functionality – that's old hat now – but also its impressive power saving capabilities: an extra 30 minutes 'over previous AMD mobile technologies' says the company, loosely.

AMD calls the wizardry behind this ambiguously beneficial battery boost 'Display Cache' and it is a memory technology which is designed to allow the CPU to operate in low power mode without accessing system memory.

As for the graphics side of things, just like the 690G, this is handled by ATI's Radeon X1200 series GPU. It carries support for Avivo, provides integrated HDMI and DVI connectivity options and is capable of playing back HD content. If this isn't enough a 16x PCI Express port allows for a more powerful external card to be added.

AMD is making the M690 chipset available immediately to partners including Asus, HP and Fujitsu Siemens so expect the first notebooks to appear in early April.

So while the company may be having a hard time of it in the desktop world, when it comes to mobility Intel clearly isn't going to break free without having to withstand a lot of hair pulling and a significant number of knees to the groin.
