Dell Offers To Strip Windows From Laptops

It isn't a problem that effects everyone though I bet a vast number of you have bought a new notebook in the last five years thinking: "But I already have a copy of Windows XP...". Well, Dell finally hears your pain.

It has announced that for the first time it will make a machine's OS – that most curious of compulsory items – optional. It will come into force first on the company's Latitude n-Series in the US than expand across the ranges and around the globe.
Interestingly, Dell attributes this change of strategy to its 'IdeaStorm' website which was only launched last week. IdeaStorm is an interactive forum where the public can submit ideas and opinions, the most popular of which make it onto the site's front page and get considered by the company itself.
Shipping a laptop sans Windows was top of the pile of user requests and consequently Dell has kept its word. Perhaps more intriguingly, the majority of the other popular suggestions address the option of a pre-installed Linux OS but Dell has rather craftily avoided that one by stating users cannot reach a consensus as to which flavour of Linux they would like.
So if you want to shave a little more margin off Micky D's already wafer thin profits you know what to do...
