If you travel a lot you want a laptop that is portable, problem is you also want it to be sturdy and those two qualities just don’t mix. Or do they?

Sony is daring to challenge this law with the release of its ultra portable G11. At just 1.13Kg the laptop is certainly in the micro class and offers a reasonable feature set for the proportions: Intel ULV Core Solo or Duo CPU, up to 2GB RAM, 1,024 x 768 native resolution, and a dual layer DVD writer.

Where the sturdiness comes in is the shock protected 100GB hard drive and carbon fibre casing which leads to claims from Sony that it can withstand drops of up to one metre – impressive. On the downside you’ll have to put up with integrated graphics so this model isn’t going to run Vista in all its Aero glory even though it ships with Vista Business Edition. Still you do get a wealth of connectivity with 802.11a/b/g, Gigabit Ethernet, a memory card reader and – for security – an integrated finger print reader.

Sony tends, more often than not, to keep its mouth shut when it comes to pricing and availability and this is the case for the G11. I’d suggest it will drop (pun - sadly - not intended) within the next month though and I’d expect to spend north of a grand for a mid-level configuration.
