The tablet PC has been undergoing something of a revival this year and Lenovo’s latest Thinkpad should whet appetites further.

The new ‘Thinkpad X60 Tablet’ is a portable, powerful beasty featuring a choice of either a 12.1in high resolution SXGA+ (1440 x 1050) display or XGA touch screen, Intel Core Duo or Solo processors, integrated 3G and even the option of Draft 802.11n WiFi. There’s also a PC Card and ExpressCard slot, fingerprint reader, and option of hard drive capacities up to 120GB.

Dimensions are appropriately skeletal with the X60 just 2.79cm to 2.87cm thick and weighing a mere 1.71Kg. Despite this battery life is a potentially vast 7.5 hours using the optional extended battery.

All good stuff then, at least until a curious decision from Lenovo to bring in Philip Lombardi, director of academic computing and media services at Bryant University to make a rather unrelated statement: “A recent campus-wide survey revealed that over 90 percent of the student body believes that computer technology enhances his or her learning experience,” he said. “Of the students surveyed, we discovered that more students would prefer to use a tablet over a traditional notebook PC because of its light weight and ease of use in taking notes.”

Ok, so it makes a certain kind of sense, but not so much when you hear that the X60 Tablet starts from a hefty £1,660. Perhaps not the machine your average student will be blowing their student loan on then?!

Still, oddities aside, the X60 Tablet looks to be a lovely machine and with tablet PC shipments set to skyrocket from one million in 2006 to four million in 2010 according to eternal research nuts IDC Lenovo is clearly committed to this growing sector. Hardly targeting students just yet though, is it?!
