Apple may be miles streets ahead of the PC when it comes to design but in terms of raw power it is still has a corner to two to catch up.

Yesterday however Job’s boys made major ground after Apple announced its MacBook Pros will finally be switching over to Intel’s yummy Core 2 Duo range of mobile processors.

Both 15 and 17in models are being equipped, the former with a choice of 2.16GHz and 2.33GHz CPUs the latter with a compulsory 2.33GHz. As is usual in these announcements Apple then towelled on the marketing shtick saying users can expect to see performance increases of up to 39 per cent but – as always – take that with a shovel-ful of salt.

Elsewhere hard drive capacities and optical drives have been improved with the 15 inchers now sporting 120GB of storage and a 6x SuperDrive as standard while its bigger brother gets a 160GB HDD and an 8x SuperDrive. FW800 PCI also available on both models.

In true Apple style both upgraded lines will be available immediately signalling a shop scramble and prices begin at just £1,349 including VAT for a 15.4in model with 2.16GHz Core 2 Duo CPU, 1GB RAM, ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 with 128MB VRAM, 120GB HDD and 6x SuperDrive. A base end 17 incher (2.33GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD, Radeon X1600 with 256MB VRAM and 8x SuperDrive) starts from £1,899 all in.
