It seems that the 4.8m batteries collectively recalled by Apple and Dell in the last month have not only made the public skittish but the major manufacturers too and Matsushita is the latest to jump on this (particularly hot) bandwagon.

Matsushita, which is the parent company of industry giant Panasonic, yesterday confirmed it is recalling 6,000 PC batteries which again face the risk of the dreaded overheat.

In this instance however Matsushita was quick to point out that unlike Apple or Dell’s Sony made batteries no cases of its batteries catching fire or injuring people had so far been reported. Indeed Sony didn’t even make them which may come as some relief.

In this instance, the risk specifically relates to a manufacturing flaw which suggests the affected batteries have a weak spot such that if dropped a small metal spring inside the battery could come loose and cause overheating. Overreaction? Possibly, but it sums up the attitude of the industry right now.

The batteries targeted were made in notebooks produced between April and May 2005, but curiously the company has declined to issue specific model numbers. I wouldn’t get too worried though since with roughly 6,500,000,000 people inhabiting the Earth and 6,000 dodgy-ish Matsushita batteries on the loose there’s about a 1,083,333:1 shot you’ll have one… and then you’ve got to drop it.
