Ultraportable Vaio Goes Sci-Fi

After a relatively quiet spell in the ultraportable market it seems the heat is now back on with Samsung, Dell and MSI all releasing swanky new featherweights in the last month. So it would be rude if Sony didn’t join the party…

With the TX3 it is gate crashing in fine style too as the futurist new lappy combines an array of futuristic technologies into a small and rather stylish package. Foremost among them is the notebook’s carbon fibre laminate casing which has the dual effect of making the machine tough (they use it is F1 racing cars, didn’t you know?) yet light (just 1.25Kg).

Elsewhere the TX3 sports an ultra compact screen thickness of a mere 4.5mm which houses an 11.1in widescreen X-black LCD display with a TV-esque 1,366 x 768 native resolution. Processors are currently limited to Intel’s Core Solo Ultra Low Voltage (ULV) line but the knock on effect is a claimed battery life in excess of seven hours.

A DVD rewriter has somehow been squished into the TX3 and biometric fingerprint recognition coupled with the company’s chip-level Trusted Platform Module (TPM) security system adds to the machine’s cutting edge qualities. A built in mic, integrated webcam, WiFi, Bluetooth and all the usual bells (slots) and whistles (ports) have made it across too meaning the laptop’s insides must be more cramped than Kingsbridge studio apartment.

Prices are expected to be in the circa £1,699 (incl. VAT) range and the TX3 will teleport itself to stores in mid July. Choices, choices, choices…
