To be fair to MSI it isn’t usually the first company to trip off the tongue when it comes to cutting edge laptops, so all the more credit to it this time around as it becomes the first company to announce a machine based on AMD’s new Turion 64 X2 processor.

The Megabook S271 is the laptop which sports the eagerly awaited CPU and despite such a powerful heart it may surprise many to find it is packaged inside a highly portable model. The S271 measures just 303 x 225 x 28mm, weighs under 2Kg and features a 12.1in anti-glare WXGA LCD. ATI’s embedded UMA graphics interface shows its mobile roots a little more, though up to 2GB of DDR2 RAM means it should zip around Windows.

Promoting its portability MSI claims the S271 operates in virtual silence and a choice of four or eight cell batteries are available though, curiously, the company doesn’t state the expected battery life. Everything else is present and correct: WiFi, Bluetooth, Ethernet, DVD rewriter, 4-in-1 card reader, 3x USB, FireWire, Express card slot ad infinitum.

The chequered flag taking little notebook is available next month with prices starting from as low as $1,500. With the World Cup about to kick off any second what else do you expect me to say…? ;)

Update:
In between matches I can now tell you the S271 should last up to five hours using the eight cell battery and prices will start from as little as £999. Now let's go get Trinidad & Tobago!

Update 2:
In a boost to all we now know the S271 will ship with 1GB RAM, an 80GB HDD and super multi DVD writer for just £749.99 including VAT. Can't say fairer than that...
