Panasonic Bounces Out New Toughbook

We’re a fan of things that don’t break here at TR so Panasonic’s latest ruggedised laptop has us exposing our fancies in hope of some extensive tickling.

Called the CF-74 it is the logically named successor to the CF-73 in the company’s curiously titled ‘Toughbook’ range. Spec boosts have been made here, there and everywhere with an Intel Core Duo T2400 (1.83GHz) processor now installed at its beating heart, a display treated to an extra anti-reflex coating (for better readability outside) and an increased brightness rating of 540cd/m2.

Enhanced battery life is purported to last up to an incredible eight hours and the 80GB hard drive can withstand shocks, vibrations and even falls from up to 30cm. On the downside, only 512MB of RAM is provided which seems a little tight given the hefty £2,089 asking price (ex VAT) and I’m sure the optional integrated GPRS/EDGE module could’ve made it in for free.

That said we’ll be getting the chance to way up the pros and cons of the CF-74 very soon with one scheduled to drop, roll and bounce into our labs any day now. In fact, with a late April release date, the CF-74 should be hitting shelves around the same time you’ll see our review, so I suggest you let Riyad and Benny get rugged on its ass and watch Spode try to look menacing before splashing the cash.
