Toshiba Debuts Laptop With HD DVD-ROM

After months of posturing it’s about time we saw actual products emerging from the next generation media battle and Toshiba has obliged today by releasing the first laptop we’ve seen with an HD DVD-ROM drive and it’s a corker…

Called the G30 it fits into the company’s Qosmio range and grabs all the headlines by integrating a front opening HD DVD disc drive which will take 30GB media, enough for feature length high definition movies.

That said there is no point putting in a technology for super rich multimedia content if the rest of the notebook can’t do it justice and here the G30 goes to town. For a start it incorporates the world’s first 1bit digital amplifier in a notebook, technology normally only seen in high end audio systems, as well as new bass-reflex technology from sound gurus Harman Kardon. The SRS Audio Enhancement System with SRS WOW HD and SRS TruSound XT technology also help create virtual surround sound, while Dolby Home Theatre supports headphone, 2.1 and 5.1 speaker systems.

Just as impressive is the display potential of the G30 with its ‘TruBrite’ 17in screen that runs a native 1920 x 1200 resolution (enough for 1080p signals) and the nVidia GeForce 7600 graphics card with 256MB VRAM for fast video reproduction and running the latest 3D games.

Even away from this multimedia heaven, the remainder of the notebook is equally well featured. There’s a dual core T2500 (2GHz) CPU, 1GB DDR2 (expandable to a massive 4GB), 2x 120GB HDDs with RAID capabilities, an HDMI out port, Bluetooth 2.0, WiFi, 6-in-1 card reader, Gigabit Ethernet, S-Video and it comes with Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 preinstalled.

The only other thing we could possibly want is a price and a release date. We should hear about that later today…
