January is a time for being skint. It is also a time for people to realise that what they don’t need are four pairs of Simpson’s socks, three foot spas, two novelty picture frames and a technical Lego set, but rather a new laptop. MV to the rescue.

With prices beginning at just £499 including VAT, the company’s new Sirius+ and Mobeus 15” laptops could be just what the bank manager accepts. The Sirius+ (top) boasts an AMD Sempron 3000+ CPU, 256MB of 400MHz RAM, a 15in XGA screen, 40GB HDD and combo CDRW/DVD-Rom drive with Windows XP Home pre-installed for less than 500 smackers all in. Bluetooth and WiFi are optional (I would certainly splash out on the latter).

For 100 notes more, the Mobeus 15” (above) ups the ante with a Celeron M 370 1.5GHz processor, 512MB of DDR2 533MHz RAM and integrated wireless. The rest of the specs stay the same, but you'll also get a bundled Vodafone Mobile Connect card with 10MB of data included for nowt. Highly recommended.

Neither are going to set the world alight in terms of raw performance, but they should keep the debt collectors from the door and if you wanted something more powerful you shouldn’t have blown all that cash on Little Timmy’s 24 gear mountain bike (he wanted an Xbox 360 anyway).
