Samsung Confirms Laptop Redesign

It seems the web is going crazy over Samsung’s radical laptop redesign (below). You, our regular loyal readers, know much better than to carry on with such hysterics of course, since we told you about it back in August.

It seems we were right on just about every detail as well (*pats self on back*). This is the world’s first laptop with a detachable screen. The screen is a 19in 1680 x 1050 monster with 280nits brightness and a 10ms response time and it does sport a DVI input. We didn’t know the name back then, but it has been revealed as the “M70” and with its adjustable display height and pitch it should provide welcome relief to “notebook neck” sufferers everywhere.

We were also right about the graphics. nVidia we said and nVidia it is, a nice GeForce Go 6600 to be precise. The rest of the machine is built on Intel’s latest Centrino chipset and Samsung has bundled a number of funky features on top such as a full sized keyboard with number pad, high end speakers with integrated subwoofer and remote control.

At 4.4Kg the company hasn’t managed to keep the weight down as much as I’d hoped (ok, 3Kg was optimistic) so it’s clearly not a machine for road warriors. That said it is clearly pushing the envelope by creating a more vertebrae friendly desktop replacement and that’s got to please everyone… chiropractors excluded.

There’s no release date for the M70 yet (and so obviously no pricing either) but I’d expect it in Q1, somewhere around the £1,500 mark.
