ThinkPads Go Widescreen

ThinkPads have got a loyal following (our own editor included), though they’ve always lacked one thing vital as far as I’m concerned: widescreen. But – as Inspector Clouseau once said after smashing a classic piano to a pile of splinters and hearing the owner scream, “But that’s a priceless Steinway!” – Not aanymoreee…

This is because shipping next month is the new Z Series. It will be available in two variations: the Z60t and the Z60m. The first features a 14in screen, the latter enlarges it by 1.4in, both share WXGA resolutions. Another (in ThinkPad terms) radical departure is the decision to offer the machines in a colour other than black. “Champagne Titanium” (pinky silver) will also be available in limited editions.

The innovations don’t stop there either. Along with the customary Pentium M processor and integrated 802.11g, Lenovo has decided to include EV-DO (Evolution Data Optimized) wireless technology and said WiMAX chips could feature in models before too long. Now that would be a sight to see…

Away from this interesting stuff, the usual boxes are ticked: media card reader, Cardbus slot, USB2.0 ports, FireWire, de-dah- de-dah. Standard Zs will ship with Windows installed, but Linux will be an option in Europe for the first time (it was previously only offered in China). Pricing has yet to be set, but don’t expect them to be cheap. That said, these could be the most interesting ThinkPads in a good, long time.
