Samsung Makes 19in Laptop

Sure as death, as sure as taxes and as sure as my football team’s inability to ever win a major trophy, a 19in laptop was a nailed on certainty. We thought it might be direct monster Dell who announced it first, but instead it is Samsung.

Of course Dell has a habit of re-badging Samsung kit (like it did with the Q30, calling it the X1) so that could still be true, but it doesn’t take any gloss off the South Korean giant’s adventurous achievement.

As you can see the, as yet unnamed, notebook has wisely gone for a widescreen aspect ratio. The resolution will be a lovely 1680 x 1050 (though I was perhaps optimistically hoping for even higher), while a good 600:1 contrast ratio, 280 nits brightness and super quick 10ms response time suggest this will be a lovely panel. What’s more, it is rumoured to be detachable.

We don’t have official confirmation of this yet, but the pictures do suggest the display will come with a stand it can dock into and we hear this will sport a DVI input. Just think: it’ll be like having a desktop with a less comfortable keyboard. Taking a brief moment to be less harsh, it does make sense that a user can adjust their notebook display during desktop work since the traditional fixed angle is notorious for inducing neck pain.

But would you ever carry something this size around with you, I hear you ask? Possibly. Take a close look at how thin the notebook is. If Samsung can get this under 3.5Kg it could easily go into a travel bag.

As for the rest of the specs, little has been divulged. Intel and nVidia as said to be supplying the processor and graphics card respectively, but that is a gamble akin to betting it will rain in Scotland this week… We await developments on this 19 incher with interest. Especially since everyone knows it is not just size that matters, but what you do with it.
