With dual core processors hitting the market at the end of last month the race is on to come up with the fastest of the next gen notebooks. Making a strong early play for the title is rockdirect with its Xtreme 64.

The Xtreme 64 may look familiar (it uses the same shell as the Xtreme Ti), but inside it is a very different animal. The desktop replacement supports both dual core Athlon 64 X2 and FX55 processors as well as ATI’s latest Mobility Radeon X800XT Platinum Edition graphics chip.

A fully user configurable machine (RAM, hard drive, etc), the 64 will be counting on its 16 pixel pipeline X800XT – a first for notebooks – and AMD’s latest and greatest to heat the desires of hardcore gamers.

The 64 is quite a coup for rockdirect (previously just Rock) since it has beaten many industry heavyweights such as Dell to announce the heavily specced flagship model.

There’s no UK price for this bruiser yet but, given the bragging rights that the company has secured with the 64, I’d be surprised if it didn’t push the notebook out to market within a month. Hopefully, we’ll have one of these pit bulls in the labs pretty soon so we can push it till it screams and then push it some more!
