John: If you're really lucky, in a few years BT may offer you 200Mbit... and then cut you off after exceeding your "fair use" limit within the first 30 seconds... ;)
"The government has promised to provide all homes in the UK with speeds of at least 2Mbps by 2012" BBC May 2009.
Just goes to show how out of touch the gov are with people and technology. Without proper investmnet in infrastructure there's little chance of a meaningful number of uk residents ever seeing speeds anywhere near 1Gbps.
The UK is sooo gonna get it ass whooped in the world by the lame attitude of our government. It goes on about the digital /global economy.. But Gordon (Brown) how do you think we will compete at a 2mbps target?
Geez. Soon WE will be the third world, talk about short sighted....<end rant>
well considering David Cam is planning to cut budget on spending, it will be another light year before we can hope for anything near 1Gbps speed.
Also I wonder, if you're downloading something over the 1Gbps Broadband, can you really achieve that speed? Woundln't it be capped by the writting speed of HDD? hmmm...
Yet another prime example on how far behind we are than everybody else makes me so mad considering how much we pay in this country it is an absolute joke. We have a laughable 8mb broadband from BT and you are lucky if you get 200kbs. seems to me we cant get anything right the Government fails on just about everything NHS = fail , The hard working and brave Arm Forces = Fail, Schools = fail, Economy = Fail, Broadband = Fail. Correct me if I have missed something. How much further will this country have to sink before something is done. Anyway that’s my little rant over with sorry.
Actually, stepping back from this all and looking at the bigger picture: by the time the gov/BT bother to update the network to allow 50Mb+, we might all be using the Mobile Internet for everything.
Here in Portugal we already got symmetric fiber speeds:
50Mb symmetric: 14.50€
100Mb symmetric: 28.80€
150Mb symmetric: 42.50€
Free installation
Unlimited traffic, traffic shaping free!!
0 Month contract, cancel anytime
15 days try without compromise
Im living in the uk and i wonder why we have to pay line rental on virgin fiber!! Are they mad !? In Portugal we don´t even pay for phone line rental! Imagine fiber line rental.
@xbrumster - couldn't agree anymore. Might I also add that 2mb/s is not the limit of broadband it is a minimum standard so that even a household living miles away from anything is entitled to 'ATLEAST' 2mb/s. This means that broadband will probably continue to expand. Seriously do you really think the Cameron would come out with a plan like that to connect everyone (enabling everyone to have online access paving the way for online voting etc (that will save money in the long run)) to the broadband network at substantial cost. I admit that if they are investing why not invest a little more and get say 10mb/s. This means Britain can lead the way in being the only country in the world to offer broadband access as a right (for each household).
@Stubob - have you every seen the film sicko (I take it you haven't). Would you like a system like the Americans totally screwed up health care system where if you cant pay your litrally dumped on the street. We also the third highest military budget in the world, and the second highest per head. Schools = fail - what has failed, its certainly not the fact that everyone is educated up to 18 regardless of their background. The economy is already beginning to look up, and every major country is following Britain's lead in having financial stimulus packages. There you go you have been corrected and this discussion has now been politically balanced. Thats my rant finished (sorry for the length but its best to cover the facts fully)
"PT" wich is Bigger and Better# than "ZON" in Portugal, will lauch 1Gbps fiber to home in 2010 and is looking to deploy 10Gbps before the end of 2012
#PT is Traffic shaping free, while the same cannot be said about ZON
In Portugal 24Mbps is standart, 100Mbps fiber to home is about to be standart and they already got 150Mb symmetric fiber to home for just 42.50€ and without the need of a phone line or line rental charge, 1Gbps is not a big deal it´s just the next step
Yeah, but you have to live in Portugal rather than England! Who wants that?
England's far superior! I mean, Portugal may have sunshine, and beautiful beaches and women, and basically be paradise with a gigabit connection, but... oh god.
BT should've laid fibre 20 years ago. Cable companies should never have existed particularly in light of the extensive damage they did to roads and pavements.
The amount of "cherry picking" that is allowed to happen today in UK service industries is scary. If you disagree, then try using public transport to get somewhere say 1 mile off a main road at a slightly unsociable hour (maybe 8-9pm).
Sure, Portugal has sunshine, beautiful beaches and women. It also has amazing fish dishes, a very relaxed and friendly people, great wines including vintage port, lovely music, excellent cakes, low prices, but ... WHAT HAVE THE PORTUGUESE EVER DONE FOR US? ;)
@wannaplay - I think someone needs to watch Monty Python's Life of Brian - it's a paraphrase of a famous line from that film (What have the Romans ever done for us?) :)
