This was done to death on Slashdot on Saturday and the general concensus there was the 3 apps limit was still in place but would not apply to things such as Windows Explorer, services running the background such as AV, firewall, small utilities etc and other Windows services.
However Microsoft is defining what can be classed as a netbook and allowed to run Windows 7 starter edition. ie:
10.2" screen maximum size
250GB hard drive or 64GB SSD
Single core cpu with max Speed of 2Ghz and thermal dissipation of 15W
You do realise that the netbooks running starter edition are never going to even get near those specs. Microsoft and manufacturers have already stated they intend to sell the majority of netbooks with home premium which means no limits as they pay standard price for windows 7. In other words bring on the dual core 128gb sdd 500gb premium netbooks!
@basicasic - that's why I worked over the Bank Holiday weekend to get it written up. There'll be an article tomorrow going up about those the new Windows 7 netbook stats as well.
@Gordon - sorry matey. Wasn't implying any critisism of you or your report. Everything is done to death on Slashdot. Just adding what extra info I had gathered. Enjoy your break :)
@Kanu - I agree. Can't see the point of full blown operating systems on underpowered devices like these anyway. For most people 3 apps open at once is likely to be overkill on a netbook. Windows 7 starter edition is likely to be just fine at at a rumoured OEM cost of $15 (much lower then XP or Vista) it won't hike the cost of a netbook too high either. Though personally I think Linux is ideal for netbooks.
DOH! Why don't they just have 1 home version and 1 business version? I really don't get the way that M$ do their OS delivery - keep it simple, have a home edition where you can turnall bells and whistles off to allow for lo-power systems like netbooks and voila.
