"Now all we need is confirmation of those Family Pack licences to marry up with the Windows 7 pricing and promotions and we'll consider this one job done... "
I'd disagree slightly. The Windows 7 rollout to date has been superb, but there is just one step missing - the easy upgrade from the beta to full retail version.
I appreciate moving files etc is easy enough to do, but it is a pain to have to reinstall a large comprehensive suite of programs - in my case it can take the best part of a day.
I'll still pre-order the retail - the incentive prices are too good to turn down - but sincerely hope that there is either a change of policy at MS or someone works out how to slipstream an upgrade.
@ Greg - Considering the beta wasn't meant for widespread distribution on Home PCs as a main operating system, it's perfectly understandable that they have decided to require a clean install (which is advisable even if there was an upgrade option).
People need to learn that beta software is for testing purposes only.
Just cant see that changing, they wont put all that effort in for a one time benefit, at least we got to try it early!
Im just hoping TrustedReviews do a "which version of windows 7" article, ill be damnned if I can see any reason to buy any version but home premium!
You can upgrade from Vista if you use the non-European version of Windows 7 - the European version doesn't include Internet Explorer and therefore needs to be a fresh install.
@Simon Heather - is it possible/easy to use a non-EU version of Windows 7?
I see that you can pre-order Home Premium on the US windows website for just $49.99 + sales tax. Over here (http://www.anvika.com/preorderw7/) we have to pay £49.99 + shipping (it's that exchange rate thing again, and we don't get IE bundled at the price either!)
So I (UK based) would rather take the USA option - what are the pitfalls?
I'm happy just to upgrade, that's the whole point - I already have Vista, I don't want the hassle of reinstalling everything else (which is my understanding of what I would have to do with a new "full version"), and I get to keep IE. So the USA $50 version is:
a) cheaper
b) more comprehensive (has IE)
c) simpler - upgrade rather than new install
what's not to like?
But my question remains - is it possible, can I buy from the USA microsoft site, download 7 and upgrade from my own UK Vista? Or is this stuff all region locked like DVD's and such?
