so do I hold off ordering my new PC, or will Microsoft be offering a free upgrade path anytime soon? I don't want to pay twice, but of course neither do I wish to injure Dell's cash flow...

Wait, didn't they offer a free upgrade from XP-->Vista just before its release? Although if that is the case they still wouldn't be doing that until nearer the full release.

with vista they had a timeframe near release where if you bought a computer with xp you did get a free vista upgrade when it came out. just need to make sure which verion they give you though.

If you buy a PC or laptop on or after July 1st '09 with Vist Home Premium, Business or Ultimate then you are eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 7 when it is released. The

versions will sync so Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium, Vista Business to Windows 7 Professional, Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 Ultimate.

Oh, well, temptation got the better of me anyway. But where are you getting this stuff from? I can't find anything 'official' about a free upgrade voucher once Windows 7 is imminent - I just supposed that the likes of Dell would offer such to prevent their orders drying up once Windows 7 is on the horizon.
