hmm, despite following this site via RSS and almost OCD checking for new stuff constantly throughout the day at work, I hadn't a clue about this! Good stuff!
Now what I want to see is a Windows Mobile client for this released - 7Mbit HSDPA should be plenty if, as you say, 2MBit doesn't ever skip! mmm want!
Well I've not been living under a large rock on a distant planet (though my lovely wife might disagree), but I have to confess that I'd never heard of Spotify. Which leads me to wondering if TR could add a new category on web services. I'm reasonably tech savvy, but at 42 I find that I'm only a week or two ahead of the national press on web crazes. How about some reviews of these things when you lot become aware of them. I wish I'd found Spotify before I forked out for Napster. Twitter I can do without anyway. Plus what's this Facebook thing? - Just kidding on that last one :)
@ Gordon - Curse you! I've installed Spotify and clicked on Lilly Allen for no other reason than she was on the front page - Lord help me, I like her! Mockney accent too!
@Chaos - A mobile version would be cool, but I have a feeling it won't be anytime soon. I'd love to see Spotify on my Sonos player, the same as Napster, but digging around it seems Spotify uses P2P and caches data on the hard disk ahead of playing. Obviously this is probably key to its ability to play good quality stuff so quickly; essentially you are streaming from your own hard disk.
As far as I know I don't think a Sonos has much in the way of memory for use in this way and I guess there'd be similar problems with a mobile. Then again perhaps I'm wrong - I frequently am.
Was listening to Spotify just as I saw this article. Brilliant service even over my 512kbps 'wet piece of string'. I used the 'invite-free' link on www.tinyurl.com/spotifylink which looks like it still works.
OMG how did I not know about this, I've been using lastFM for a while now, but this... this is truly the service I've been looking for! Even has film scores! Just incredible.
Yep, Spotify is great. I've heard it's supposed to show you ads from time to time but I haven't come across one since I've been using it. I mainly use it to listen to a full track before I buy it on Amazon or iTunes. I've also noticed that there's a "buy from" link on the right-click menu in Spotify but it hasn't been enabled yet - hopefully they'll add this feature in a future release.

Along with 'ReplayMusic' (google it) - A match made in heaven ;o) (so i've read, you understand?)
This is the best service on the internet since the invention of email! I'll be upgrading to the paid service. It's so good to see the big labels in music *finally* waking up and playing the game. In fact this software coupled with 'Graboid Video' should cover all music & video wants covered.
@Gordon - thanks for the tip off. Missed this before your article. Agree that the interface is excellent. I don't think I would pay for it as I have most of the music I want already. However, I can see this being excellent for trying things and finding new music. Very cool! And the Music Industry has sanctioned this!?! I am shocked!
I agree this is an excellent service and although it's still just easier to use Winamp which has all the stuff I like rather than having to find it, it's great for when I'm on a computer where I don't have any of that saved, or if I want to find a track I heard on the radio to decide if I want to buy it or not, instead of going to YouTube (where the quality is awful). It's not quite comprehensive though, and right within my first few searches I found they only had the few most popular tracks from a band from a compilation album, or none at all.
Still, it's a great product that I'd never thought I'd see in this day and age with aggressive copyright lawsuits and censorship by the big record labels and trade associations.
P.S. - I certainly haven't been living under a rock for the past few months, but this program somehow slipped under my radar. I'm sure you haven't mentioned it before, though - were you trying to keep it under wraps?
I am another who believed themselves to be up with tech stuff but had not ever heard of Spotify! Anyway, it's great and the Subways are playing right now! Thanks for the heads up Gordon :)
wow, awesome can find almost any music I want - didn't have prog rock band Greenslade though. gonna have to get a hi fi system again, 5.1 speakers for gaming & movies don't do justice to the quality. gonna dust off my Mission speakers & get a new amp. need a client now for my blackberry & psp, I think the interface is really clean - no wasted flash animations etc. also, love the album covers in radio station mode. some tracks for your delictation :- Tower of Power_Don't Change Horses in the Middle of the Stream, Hawkwind_Hurry on Sundown, Montrose_Bad Motor Scooter, Disturbed_Land of Confusion, Him_Wicked Game, UFO_Rock Bottom. I love classic rock, as you can tell, and discovered a new band today due to this in radio mode - Mustasch, awesome.
Hmm, after using for a few days and reading the spotify faq's there is one big caveat.
'I can’t find a track, album or artist I’m looking for?
In the future we aim to have all the worlds music available, however, we are currently in beta and are updating our catalogue so it’s possible that you won’t be able to find some of your favorite artists or tracks. We are working really hard to grow our catalogue as quickly as possible by constantly adding new content so you can get more and more music. Unfortunately some artists have opted not to be added to Spotify at this time, some frequently requested artists that are not in Spotify include Metallica, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, ACDC and Led Zeppelin, etc.'
as usual the main cash cows are not available, it was this greed from record companies that created the P2P phenomenon in the first place.
'What countries is Spotify available in?
We’ve released our free advertising supported version in Sweden, Norway, Finland, the UK, France and Spain. In most other countries Spotify Premium is available for purchase.'
I love Spotify. Im still getting to grips with it. It would be nice if playlists could be put up somehow within the actual program but from some quick googling I realise its pretty easy to use playlists and the likes. Some stuff is missing at the moment but any service like this that still has the absolutely amazing To My Boy album available is a must!
