I'm actually in love with Samsung's market-disrupting methods; its not often you see companies that big be so dynamic and unwilling to 'toe the line'.. Just wish they had some of Apple's design prowess and marketing knack - they would be a force to rule all forces... I certainly hope they pull this latest move off - at this pace, 2.5" could be gone by christmas 2010. I just hope they release the 2.5" flash drives in both IDE and SATA for a bit longer; some of us DO have semi-legacy devices that have only retired because of damn spindles, and would relish the chance to come back onto the scene under the moniker "SSD-powered" :)
I think this is a bad idea until ssd are as cheap as hdd for an equivalent size. Surely most people are served perfectly well by hdd and would rather have more space for the money they are paying
@Joe: This is just 1.8 inch drives, which are really only fitted to small portable devices. The 2.5 inch hard disk should be around for as long as there's a market for them.
Having said that, I don't want to see the iPod Classic disappear. My music collection is too large for a (very expensive) 32GB flash device.
@Chris: Do you not think that a mass adoption of 1.8" SSDs would drive prices down to allow near like-4-like prices, at least at that size anyway? Don't forget there is a premium already to get those high capacities in such a small form factor; i'm thinking that's why it's a market that Samsung have targeted in such a massive way..
