About time, but too late for me, my games collection is too big on the 360 to mix and match and the Sony exclusives are not to my taste. Too much water has run under my gaming bridge.
I would have though £230 is more in line. Maybe even less given the fact you can get a PS3 for £290.. which is very close to $400. Amazon uk actually sell the PS3 cheaper if you consider you can get 2 new games and a HDMI cable for £300. $300 currenly equates to £214.
Too little too late though in my opinon. I brought a standalone blu-ray player back in November. I would have gotten a PS3, there were a few games I would have brought. But no price drop showed up in time. They didn't want me to get one I guess... their loss.
$300 is £215 ex VAT - at 15 per cent to that and you get £250. Unless you can justify a games console as a business expense, you're not going to get one for much less than £250 if you ask me.
Personally, I think £300 is still good value, even when compared to you-know-what. I paid £400 for mine shortly after release, and it's some of the best money I've ever spent.
I wish they hadn't watered down the newer versions by getting rid of the backwards compatibility, USB ports and media card readers, though - then it would be even better value.
@Hugo Yes... But, as I said. The current price isn't the US price + VAT. It's basically the same as the US price. So £230 isn't crazy talk.
@jopey Yes, but they haven't increased the UK price in the face of the pound dropping like a stone, so the chances are they will take this opportunity to bring prices back into line in view of the exchange rate. US price + VAT (if not more) is pretty standard, so I agree with Hugo you're probably looking in the £250 bracket.
As a PS3 owner, I believe £300 is excellent value. Sony are always saying that you are paying for the complete experience, and they are right. Built in wireless, hard drive, free online play, blu-ray player. £300 is a bargain. (Xbox live is £40 a year)
Everyone wants to own a PS3 eventually, and Sony knows that.
Live can easily be had for around £25 in the same way that the PS3 can easily be found for less than £299. I defintely think it's worth every penny although obviously free is my favourite price.
With the PS3 you may be paying for the complete experience but I don't think that it's as good as the 360 experience. Live is one factor but also normally getting inferior versions of most multi platform games.

It needs to be closer to £200 to justify it for me. I dont care about it having free wireless or a hard drive. Adding up the individual components and telling me I'm getting a good deal is not going to sell me the machine. Doesn't Sony produce the machines for something close to £600? On that basis even at £400 it was an utter bargain. What interests me is how much it costs compared to the 360 and how much of a gaming experience it provides me in comparison. Right now, being kind I'd say the PS3 is about on a par with the PS3 as a gaming platform so a price around £230 feels about right.
Something no one ever points out, when you see both systems up close it's pretty obvious the PS3 costs a lot more to make. PS3 feels like a high end bit of AV kit, while the 360 feels flimsy and cheap, so the cries for price matching do seem a little unfair.
I love my PS3, best bit of home theatre kit I've ever bought. Hardly use it for playing games to be honest. Streaming media from my PC is awesome, browsing the internet and watching things like the BBC iPlayer on my big TV is quality. The Blu-Ray player is excellent for my setup and with blu-rays costing the same to rent as DVDs now I'm never going back.
I paid £300 for mine with loads of things bundled, you'd struggle to build a PC for twice that which had the same features and it wouldn't look half as good sat under my TV.
Why is there such an issue with the price of the PS3??
I've got an XBOX 360 but it will never match the PS3 in terms of technology/price.
An XBOX with 60GB HD is approx £160
+ approx £60 for a wireless adaptor (as most people don't have ethernet cables running around their houses)
£150 for a decent standalone blu-ray player
So far that is ~£370 for 'equivalent' hardware - so in my opinion the PS3 is worth the money, even at around £250
There's also the extremely annoying 'Microsoft' only hardware for the XBOX, try adding a generic hard drive or wireless adaptor!, or even try to fix a faulty DVD drive. Not a task for the everyday non-geeky user.
The price cut has been rumored for so long now that I'm glad I didn't wait - otherwise I would have missed out on the last 4 months of enjoying my PS3. And I don't need to burn PS3 Blu-ray, so it replaces both my DVD player and gives me Blu-Ray, which looks great on my new Panasonic plasma.
I have no blinkered view of the PS3 I just try to stick to the facts.
The PS2 is the best ever console produced to this day.
Built in wireless - THATS really BAD for laggy games. NO IT IS NOT #YES IT IS!!! 802 WIRELESS WILL NEVER REACH THE SPEED OF AN ETHERNET CABLE SO WHEN PEOPLE QUIT ON YOU YOU NOW KNOW WHY#
HDD - a measly 60gb requires an instant upgrade. XBOX HAS 60GB TYPICALLY #YES MINE HAS 120GB NON MS AND THAT IS EASIER TO INSTALL THAN A PS3 HDD#
Free Online Play - XBL owns PSN it costs 4p a day tops. FAIR ENOUGH #MAKE XBL FREE LOL#
Blu Ray Player - a slow HD drive with no record functionality no thanks. XBOX WILL NEVER HAVE BLU-RAY SUPPORT #I DON'T CARE BLU RAY WILL MEET ITS DEATH THE SOONER THE BETTER, SUPERIOR FORMATS ARE ALREADY ON THE WAY#
You slag off MS for giving you OPTIONAL components see above for HDD and wireless, they charge high I agree but they DO NOT FORCE YOU INTO A FORMAT LIKE SONY DO WITH BLU RAY.
Check sony's history start with ATRAC or minidisc or UMD.
Yes I could fix my DVD drive quite easily it's easier than replacing the PS3 BR drive.
Now I am not geeky I just try to be informed you respond to my comment saying it's poor well all I am going to say is you made a really poor choice, the PS3 is the worst product Sony have ever released. All you seem to really be bothered about is £60 MS charge for an adapter because you feel the need to be wireless.
OK I don't care anymore now, i'm not here to comfort the conscience of the Sony buying public.
Shame on some of u lot!!! - turning this into the innevitable XBOX 360 Vs PS3 fanboy debate - but...quite amusing 2 read some of these digs. Well, let me tell u something, my ZX Spectrum 48k+ (8-bit 2 the unknown) will kick the lot of your console's asses put 2gether - bwahahahaha!!! :)
While the PS3's blu-ray player is never going to boost the HD format in the way PS2 popularised DVD, it is undoubtedly excellent at what it does. As for the games, Killzone 2 and LBP are two outstanding examples of their respective genres.
Is PS3 a bargain? Undeniably. But is it too expensive in comparison with Xbox? Also, a yes.
I still don't see how an XBOX DVD drive and HD is easier to fix/replace. How many people reading on here know how to disassemble an XBOX, and copy/modify/flash a BIOS ?????
Sony are not forcing Blu-Ray, it just happens to be the only standard for HD players at the moment.
Hank, what are you talking about, if you only like to stick to the facts why are you making up so many untruths!!!
Lets have a little look-see at your hearsay, or just made up facts.
Built in wireless - THATS really BAD for laggy games. NO IT IS NOT #YES IT IS!!! 802 WIRELESS WILL NEVER REACH THE SPEED OF AN ETHERNET CABLE SO WHEN PEOPLE QUIT ON YOU YOU NOW KNOW WHY#
Lets see, I was under the impression that speed was determined by your Broadband connection, my wireless router can send out a signal of 125MBPS and my PS3 can recieve at that speed, I believe int he UK that Virgin have 50MBPS the fastest in the UK. So essentially the PS3 network speeds will only be as fast as your internet connection.
So saying it lags is ridiculous.
HDD - a measly 60gb requires an instant upgrade. XBOX HAS 60GB TYPICALLY #YES MINE HAS 120GB NON MS AND THAT IS EASIER TO INSTALL THAN A PS3 HDD#
A measley 60GB, urrrr only your XBOX Elite has non user upgradable 120gb all the rest are on par or below the PS3, and there is also now a 160GB PS3, mine is 320GB and upgraded easy as you guys get he red ring of death.
So another ridiculous statement by your self.
Ok time for more insanity from XBOX loving Hank the plank.
Free Online Play - XBL owns PSN it costs 4p a day tops. FAIR ENOUGH #MAKE XBL FREE LOL#
Now this one is my personal favourite, I have XBOX loving friends wh have tried this on. XBOX dont own the PSN, thats ridiculous, and even if they did, what relevance to the fact that its free is this? Its a silly, non-factual and desperate statement. Does XBOX issue a booklet with there consoles, '101 LIes to justify and inferior console to PS3 owners.
I will give you this XBOX Live is much nicer and easier to use, but it should be for having to pay for it, given the choice not paying for it always wins.
Blu Ray Player - a slow HD drive with no record functionality no thanks. XBOX WILL NEVER HAVE BLU-RAY SUPPORT #I DON'T CARE BLU RAY WILL MEET ITS DEATH THE SOONER THE BETTER, SUPERIOR FORMATS ARE ALREADY ON THE WAY#
WHat are you talking about, BLU-Ray has become the HI-Def standard since the demise of HD-DVD, a format that XBOX threw themselves into blindly just to be on opposing sides to Sony. Also XBOX have forced you into a format - DVD I dont see the XBOX giving you other options.
Listen, youve got an XBOX thats great Im sure you enjoy playing on it. As far as easing SOny buyers, WHAT!!!!! That makes no sense, also I think youll find the Mini-Disc was a slightly worse product than the PS3.
I dont mind opnion or back and forth trading of console plus's etc, but youve just made stuff up.
Also a little word on exclusives, HALO 3 is poor, poor, poor, Gears of War is awesome.
But they really are XBOX's only exclusives, try - Litlle Big Planet, Killzone 2, Drakes Fortune, MGS 4 for starters, they are all awesome exclusives.
Also I dont see XBOX with to much backwards compatibility.
Essentially Hank you clearly do care about all of this, or you wouldnt have spent so much time making up PS3 fallacys.
