£60 for an official Acer battery is nothing new, infact it's slightly below average based on the rare occasions I have to stock official batteries (I usually go for 3rd party), just because it's a battery for a cheap laptop doesn't then make the battery cheap too.

Indeed, batteries are one of the least appreciated price inflating features of any notebook. Conceivably, were the Eee PC 901 to feature only a 3-cell battery like the Acer Aspire One, it could retail for a fair amount less - presuming Asus would pass the saving on at least.
Batteries for me are one of the most frustrating parts of a laptop. As you say they are expensive, they also degrade rapidly and their technological advances lag a long way behind those of the other components. If they had matured like CPUs or GPUs we'd have 6 month batteries the size of a memory key by now ;)
