*moans and groans in a corner* Ok, why didn't Microsoft AND Sony thought about these details before releasing their consoles? I guess I am being very pessimistic (as always some might say) about it but still. The reason I am probably more annoyed is because of my PS3. Everytime we're subject to a system update, it takes forever to download the said update and then install the said update. It's an annoyingly slow process (And I have a fast internet connection, wired), although it has become much quicker lately (Not Xbox fast though, but still). What makes it more annoying is that, once you've done your updating, a couple of weeks down the line, you're hit by yet another update. Aaarrrgh, anyway, I am just having a wee moan. Ignore me, I'm heading back to my corner...
PS: Before someone jumps on my back and labels me as a fanboy for the comment above, please note that I own and use over 10 consoles (PS3, PSone, Dreamcast, Xbox, Xbox360, Wii, GameCube, PSP, DS, DSLite, Megadrive, NeoGeo Pocket, Snes, ...), depending what game I wanna play. There, I've said it.
When are Sony going to "get it"? In-game Text chat? Seriously, they think that people are going to keep pausing their game to swap messages with a friend playing a different game? I say different game because I've tried joining friends in games & its an experience totally dependent on the game in question. I know Sony shouldn't just copy the Xbox but come on, we need x-game/x-activity voice chat and a standard way of inviting friends into games. I own both an Xbox360 and a PS3 so I'm not biased either way but I do think that the Xbox has a far better on-line experience and that the PS3 has a long way to go to catch up with that. I'll get off my soap box now and go join a voice chat with 8 Xbox friends, some are playing a game, others are in Media Center, some watching a video, while others are listening to music.
I don't own a PS3 (plan to when they reduce the price to be in-line with the 360's).. if you can't invite a friend to a game, how do you play together? I don't get that. Is it left to pure chance that you both get on the same server? What about coop?
@jopey You CAN invite friends. Only Microsoft and their army of brainless drones are the ones saying you can't. Watch out, they visit most blogs on the net spreading their lies and misinformation.
It's all part of Microsofts viral markerting campaign to win this generation with inferior hardware. Don't invest in tech, invest in viral marketing instead, let the braindead fanboys post our message.
@Jopey - "I don't own a PS3 (plan to when they reduce the price to be in-line with the 360's).. "
You'll be waiting a very long time mate. They have a long way to go. Or Sony could take out the integrated wireless, HDD, Blu-Ray player and bundled wireless rechargeable controller, replace the quiet chassis with an inefficient heat-trap with cheap noisy fans and reduce their prices accordingly. Personally, I'm very happy to have spent the extra on a PS3.
No need to be all defensive John! It might well be a good deal for you, but for me, I already have a blu-ray player and a 360, so it's way too much money. Things like a little extra disc space and a wireless adapter are irrelevant. Any cross platform title looks the same on my 360, so those games don't factor in. There are just a couple of ps3 exclusives I want to play... it's just they aren't worth nearly £300. I'm in no rush, if Sony don't offer them at a reasonable price, I just won't play them, no skin off my back.
Sony's media hub strategy is brilliant long-term thinking and working with the PS3. As technologies such as Blu-Ray become popular I can see the PS3 eventually outselling the Xbox and Wii. They need a good strategy. Highlight not the technoliges, but what you can atually do with a PS3 through some clever ads.
However their PSP strategy is definitely wrong. They don't seem to understand the games that people want to play on the move. As good as God as War is visually, I can't just open it and play on the bus (due to the checkpointing etc...) even simplistic games such as patapon, or the excellent fifa 09 cannot be played casually due to the same problems. It needs more games similar to advance wars, tetris, meteos and Picross. Open, play for a few minutes and turn off.
@jopey You shouldn't have wasted your cash on a inferior Blu-Ray player and a inferior console, and just got a PS3, which is a topnotch console, and a topnotch BD player...
You can get a PS3 fro £279, which is like £50 more than a 360 (not really counting the Arcade here, as it's so gimped it's not even worth mentioning), and you will spend £50 a year to play online on the 360. So Blu-ray comes free, as does wireless connectivity, after the 2nd year, those £50 yearly fees start adding up..
Anyone that thinks the PS3 is expensive is clearly a moron, I mean nobody looks at the sticker price, they look at the full price, what it includes (BD, Wifi) and any recurring costs (£50/Year Xbox Live).
