"16:9 content will also be ‘adapted' to fit the 21:9 aspect ratio screen but it will be interesting to see if this is little more than just elaborate stretching or zooming. That said with a spring release timeframe it could provide the ultimate set for vertical black bar haters.

Horizontal black bar haters on the other hand? Not, so much."

I actually really like this idea.

But it does start the whole issue all over again that we had years ago regarding TV being stretched to fit and looking terrible. Back then though it was 4:3 and at least that was on the way out. Now we've finally got a 16:9 standard for most TV and HD fast coming up on many popular channels. It will be a long long long time (if ever) that we get 21:9 TV.

Bet it would look stunning in the living room though and KUDOS to Philips for trying something new.

I love the concept. One issue though is to do with the Ambilight, if you are watching a 4:3 program surely the Ambilight is going to look very strange being that far from the image.

Saying that I would go and buy one (or at least add to my dream list.)

I really like this and have often wondered why screens weren't available in this ratio. Most of the movies I watch are in 2.35:1 CinemaScope so it will really benefit from that.

I don't mind vertical bars when watching 16:9 material. The only issue is that of comparing screen sizes. A 56" 21:9 screen will only show a 45" 16:9 picture. The benefits will therefore depend on which content you view more of.

Fnatastic idea! I hardly ever watch tv, mainly use iPlayer if i do need to watch something and i'm so sick of horizontal bars, they're second on my list of irritations behind blister packaging

This is very interesting, and I hope it catches on with more manufacturers, but it probably has a limited market appeal. Seems it would be perfect in a home cinema setup (wish I had one!) where it roles would mainly be playing high definition content with a wider aspect ratio than 16:9, rather than just in front of the sofa for watching the evils of daytime TV where much of that lovely screen space would be wasted. Still as they are the only manufacturer of such a screen (as far as I'm aware), I'm sure it would sell reasonably well until others join the party.

I think the comment "it could provide the ultimate set for vertical black bar haters" is actually probably right. On its basic setting it will presumably have black bars either side to provide a 16:9 picture. So all haters of vertical black bars would flock to this set. Hence its ultimate status would be guaranteed.

Moot point really - I want one and I will never be allowed to have one unless they do a 32" version which somewhat defeats the point.
