The story isn't quite right, as according to http://shop.o2.co.uk/update/unlockmyiphone.html Pay Monthly customers can get their phones unlocked free of charge
R-Type on the iPhone! Yesss! Mind you, they will probably implement some type of "all new and improved" tilt-based control, and ruin it. Fingers crossed.
Hold on, so because other networks weren't selling the phone they wouldn't unlock it? What a scam.
Also how do they get away with charging for unlocking? My mates iphone here in Denmark just got an sms telling him it was unlocked on the date of his 6 month contract ending.

I assume it was an agreement with Apple, but now Apple are allowing other networks to sell the Iphone I assume the agreement is now Null & Void. But in any case like you say it's still a scam, these network exclusivity deals suck.
I have an O2 iPhone and O2 Broadband. Just spoken to O2 customer services and they knew nothing about the tethering deal. They said there system won't get a tariff update till January! Which is obviously rubbish as deals come out all the time. Plus they were not exactly poilite. I was told as he did not know about it it it didn't exist and that I must be getting confused with the discount of cheaper broadband when your an O2 customer which is a deal that has been going since O2 broadband started.
