Nintendo raising their UK prices you say? Gosh, not like them to leave those in the UK feeling a little shafted!
I am a huge Nintendo fan owning all their consoles over the years but I reckon I've heard every excuse under the sun from them for price hikes, high prices, etc in this country.
"Every excuse under the sun" is a little harsh. If you've looked at what your holiday money will buy you, in the middle of last year you got around 2 dollars for your pound. Right now it's around 1.40 - your pound buys you 30% fewer dollars. Basic prices of the stuff going into a Wii are typically in dollars. Transportation's likely a bit cheaper thanks to fuel costs but it still costs money to pay people ($) and run equipment ($) to produce and sell stuff; $ prices aren't that much lower. So a 10% increase in the price in pounds sounds to me like they've taken the exchange rate hit for six months and they need to start passing about a third of it on.
Totally agree with Luan Bach, regardless of the currency fluctuations they've been making (increasing) profits of each Wii since launch. It like 7 years old hardware, how much does it really cost to make? And as has been said when the pound was at record highs did we see price drops?
I remember a time when I used to hope that Nintendo would succeed again but maybe they could now do with some of Sony's newfound humbleness. The only silver lining I can see is that it might help me get a better price when I try to sell my (dust gathering) Wii.
The hardware in the Wii and the Gamecube are extremely similar. The Wii is only about 50% faster than the GC.. So i think clearly Nintendo are cleaning up on the price of the Wii!
Nothing to do with exchange rates or manufacturing and transportation costs. The price of something is what the market can bear, and Nintendo must figure that with sustained demand for the Wii they can screw a bit more out of the British public!
Due to the popularity of the Wii prices hasn't dropped and in this case has increased in the UK. Ninetendo can easily subsidise the price.
All consoles in history has dropped in price year after year. This is the first time I've seen a console remain at it's launch price for god knows how long now.
At the end of the day if you think you're being ripped off don't buy it. This hurts them the most.
I and many of my friends will not now buy a Wii until the price is at or below £179. Yes I know we are in a recession but this is just taking the mickey :(
Guess I should get my Wii fixed (it's optical died this year, seems to happen after a couple of years) so I can flog it to someone else for closer to original price than I expected.
I can't believe this. £200 for a console that has been out since 2006. If you are not into Wii Sports or Mario games, Xbox 360 represents a much, much better buy. Its almost half the price! Nintendo is ripping consumers off and it looks like they can get away with it.
Remember how NWA felt about their local law enforcement community? Substitute 'Nintendo' for 'Police' and that about sums up my thoughts.
