As Iwata says: "one rule always remains the same: Software sells hardware."
Except that isn't true in this case. It's not the software that sells the consoles, 90% of which is utter crap by the way, it's the gimmicky nature of the console. People see it and think 'oooh, that looks fun' only to be bitterly disappointed after their enjoyment lasted a whole 3 hours before the novelty wore off.
P.S. - I thought the PS2 had sold more like 150 million, not 50 million. That kind of makes the article title misleading...I'm not on the Daily Mail website am I?
The PS2 has sold 140 million worldwide, and 50 million in North America alone. Both the Wii and the PSP have sold >50 million worldwide. I looked it up because the article left me confused, too. Both are really odd devices to compare Wii sales to, anway... FWIW the 360 has apparently sold approximately 28 million, the PS3 about 22 million. (Source: WP)
did you mean that the Wii has sold 50m (way) faster than the PS2 or PSP (or anything else)?
and i'm pretty sure that the ps2 has not been out for 9 years more than the wii. maybe 6 or 7.
i bought my wii on launch day and after finishing zelda i've barely bothered with it. the only reason i haven't sold it is that my girlfriend plays it semi regularly. i used to swear by nintendo but now i don't even know if the promise of a new zelda could sway to buy a new console.
