There was a launch event on the 10th of September in the US. That is where they unveiled this phone. They will probably still have something new to announce on the 15th though, so don't worry. Sanjay Jha (Co-CEO of Motorola) has indicated that they will be launching/unveiling quite a lot of Android phones in the coming months.
@Simon - This phone is meant to be an entry level phone. I actually think it looks pretty good for an entry level phone, maybe you should look for some hands-on video to get a better impression on what this phone really looks like. One example would be this video over here: http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/10/video-motorola-cliq-quick-hands-on/
The hardware specs are what you would expect from a lower end phone these days, it has roughly the same internals as the HTC Hero. The better part though, is that most people whom have had some hands-on time with the phone say it is much more responsive and quick than the HTC Hero though and some even claim that the MotoBlur interface is much better than HTC Sense.
Apart from the HTC Sense UI making the Hero a bit sluggish, I'd say it looks way better than that MotoBlur. Again, just initial impression, but I hate that weird confusing "comic-book speech bubbles" home screen. Ugh!
